Ellis Island History Movie: Immigration DVD (1946) This 1946 film describes the history and process of European immigration to the United States until 1924 when a restrictive immigration bill was passed. Produced by Encyclopedia Britannica, there is a mixture of actual footage, maps showing the flow of immigration, and reenactments. In one such reenactment, footage captures a scene from a European steamship office that shows the different motivations and immigration issues – religious, political, or economic, that may have driven many Europeans to emigrate. Scenes of Jews being turned out of their houses and of people laboring in fields further illustrates this point. There are also many great scenes from Ellis Island and New York City, including documentation lines, doctor examinations, immigration and naturalization services, and city tenements. This is a nice Ellis island history video, which details the immigration experience. The film notes that these immigrants were helped by the trade unions to learn to work together. Newly naturalized citizens are shown raising their right hands in front of a judge in a courtroom, and the film ends by showing a panning shot of the Statue of Liberty. Typical of the time period, the film glosses over the concerns of Native Americans and immigrants who weren’t white. But this only serves to make the film more historically enlightening, as an exploration of racism in American history. But mainly the film is full of great Ellis Island immigration stories.

Garfield The Movie-purrfect Coll-ed [dvd/2 Disc/ws/p&s] Every now and then, the CGI effects in Garfield: The Movie are less than perfect–which makes you realize how astonishingly seamless the rest of the effects are. When Garfield’s owner, Jon (Breckin Meyer, Clueless), agrees to take in a homeless dog so as to flirt with a sexy veterinarian (Jennifer Love Hewitt, I Know What You Did Last Summer), Garfield does his best to oust the dog from the house. But when a greedy television performer (Stephen Tobolowsky, Bossa Nova) kidnaps the mutt for his own nefarious purposes, Garfield sets out on a rescue mission. Garfield is a terrible movie, yet there’s something weirdly compelling in its awfulness. Bill Murray (Rushmore, Ghostbusters), who voices the fat cat, has mastered a comic style that wallows fondly in ridiculousness. Perhaps, seduced by the siren call of Murray’s voice, the audience can only marvel at the sublime junk of our culture. –Bret Fetzer

CHAIN REACTION (DVD MOVIE) Customer Review: A Heartfelt Tale of Finding One’s Identity
Dear Amazonians,

“The Chain Reaction”, starring Johan Paulik, is a sweet story about how a young man comes to accept his homosexuality. For all of us in the gay community, of which I am a proud member, coming to accept our sexuality is a very puzzling and tumultuous period in our lives. So when Johan sets foot in a gay bar for the first time, and feels uncomfortable looking at the barman, we can feel his discomfort.

There is no actual dialog in this film, except for a voice purporting to be Johan’s, constantly asking himself if it is all right to have attractions and emotions for other men. As the film progresses, Johan becomes more comfortable with himself, and finally finds himself added to the other characters’ “chain” of attraction. This film does not show any “hardcore” sex. If graphic sex is what you are looking for, look elsewhere. However, if you want to see a very believable coming of age film involving gay youth, then I highly recommend this title. I watched this film several years ago, and it led to my own “coming out.” As of this writing, I have been out of the closet for over a year, and I owe it, partly at least, to this beautiful production.

Customer Review: Delightful! Get this!
I am very please with this OVA. Although only roughly 45 mins long, it is definitely worth the money, unlike Kizuna 1 & 2 recently re-released [...] . To truly appreciate this OVA, I suggest you read Books 1 to 3 of this beautiful series. This OVA is an adaptation of Books 2 and 3 and it is simply wonderful. No explicit sexual scenes here, unlike the books, but the wonderful adaptation more than make up for the lack. (If you are into sex, get “My sexual harassment which is very kinky but not much plot). It is a joy to watch my top favorite Yaoi couple, Ran & Kei, “alive” on TV. This OVA is a lovely love story by itself and a must collection to this series. Oh yes, could anyone be kind enough to tell me another way to acquire book 4 of Kizuna? It is available through Bebeautifulmanga.com but I have no way of purchasing it as they do not cater to an international buyer, like myself. Unfortunately Amazon seems to have difficulty securing the right to sell any Yaoi manga release by this publisher. Back to this OVA, just get it!

If you’re a fan of Kizuna, you should have this DVD in your collection. There are some changes from the manga, but it’s always great to see our favorite twosome together. The rating is misleading because there isn’t really anything too steamy in this OAV. (The rating must come from the My Sexual Harrassment trailer.)
