Fullmetal Alchemist Complete TV DVD Set + Movie 7 DVD Boxset (Sale)

Fullmetal Alchemist Complete TV DVD Set + Movie 7 DVD Boxset 7 disc, region free. English dubbed. English and Japanese language. English subtitles.
Customer Review: Decent Product
The shipping time was excellent, and I enjoyed the product, however, the first DVD had formatting problems and would not immediately play. It took multiple attempts for the DVD to read in the player. The other DVD’s were fine.
Customer Review: Yup, totally bootleg, low quality
I should have looked harder I guess, but how can you tell? The price wasn’t far off of the others at the time.

Apparently these were ripped and re-encoded rather poorly. Problems I noticed from the start – the sound timing is off on some words, and the subtitles are low quality, oddly colored and off-timed as well.

Well, it can’t be too long before the US distributor gets its act back together, or the license goes to another manufacturer, and then we’ll have the real ones for sale again.

KISMET (1955) (DVD MOVIE) (Sale)

KISMET (1955) (DVD MOVIE) Hollywood’s excursions into Arabian Nights exotica don’t come much daffier than Kismet, a 1955 MGM adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. The score includes two standards, “Baubles, Bangles, and Beads” and “Stranger in Paradise,” but the blend of Broadway razzmatazz and Middle Eastern culture is, to say the least, awkward. (One comic number revolves around a man about to have his hand chopped off for thievery.) There’s plenty here for musical fans to enjoy, and a well-cast Howard Keel does his chesty best as an itinerant poet who fast-talks his way to riches; this was Keel’s last starring role in an MGM musical. Unfortunately, Vic Damone is a wet rag as the young prince, the garish Eastman Color photography has not aged well, and director Vincente Minnelli seems not entranced by the material. Still, there is something fascinating about Dolores Gray belting out “Baghdad, this irresistible town!” as though singing the praises of Vegas or Monte Carlo. –Robert Horton
Customer Review: Kismet – a classic musical
The singing of Ann Blyth and the acting of Dorores Gray along with a fine music score make this a classic.
Customer Review: Fun, catchy, I love this movie!
This is not an historically accurate, intellectual movie. This is a fun and catchy and stick-in-your-head musical romp. I’ve been looking for this movie on DVD for years and can’t wait for April! I have the soundtrack to tide me over til then. It’s actually one of my favorite musicals from this time period because it does what a movie is supposed to do…it entertains!

Customer Review: Embracing love Dvd
Is a great dvd for yaoi lover’s, especially yoai lovers who want some cute romance not just the love making.
Customer Review: Well, it only took eight years to get here…

Eight years after the original release of the classic yaoi OVA for the widely popular manga series by Youka Nitta, we finally have Embracing Love (Haru wo Daiteita) legally available on American shores thanks to Kitty Media’s license. Previously, the title was only available for download or viewing on streaming websites via fansubs, but now a legitimate DVD release is here.

Embracing Love is the story of two rival adult film stars who by chance are selected to compete for the same role in a gay erotic film. This chance encounter results in a passionate relationship between the two men, who break from adult films and into more mainstream roles in films and television, while juggling this new and controversial foray into a same-gender love affair. The OVA covers about the contents of the first two volumes of the manga series, summarizing what led Katou and Iwaki together in flashbacks and skipping over a number of the less significant details in the story in favor of covering more plot.

The animation quality is surprising good for this genre. Characters move smoothly, backgrounds are detailed and color and lighting are apropriate for each scene’s mood. The OVA predates the excessive use of CG found in so many anime now, making the animation more cohesive overall. The audio is also of a high quality, featuring veteran voice talents for both male leads and a soundtrack of more popular musical fare than the average yaoi DVD generally offers.

The love scenes are numerous and range from the innocent to the erotic. They still don’t break from censorship conventions and don’t show all the naughty bits, but there is actual animated sound, sweat and movement. The uninspired obscuring of naked bodies can at times be almost frustratingly laughable. Limbs, faces, sheets and clothing (especially the clothing) “in the way of the good stuff” serve only to torment the inner fangirl of the viewer.

The translation is sometimes awkward. They opted to go with a straight translation of honorifics (the -san, -kun, etc. used after names to denote formality or familiarity between people) rather than retaining them in the subtitles. This works sometimes, but comes off strange to a Western audience who probably can’t fathom why Katou refers to Iwaki so formally throughout the series as “Mr. Iwaki” (particularly in the bedroom). There simply isn’t a smooth way to translate this uniquely Japanese convention, which is why many translations simply don’t try to and instead retain the original honorofics in the English localization. There were also times when the translation was just a bit too literal and ended up reading stiltedly, taking the English-only speaking viewer out of the story. In that regard, the original fansub, which took a few more poetic licenses for the sake of a smoother read, captured the essense of the script somewhat better than this professional translation.

The DVD menu has an amusing feature in that instead of simply omitting the Set Up menu, you are given the only (selectable) choice of, “Japanese with English Subtitles.” The special features include some original and unsubtitled spots for the Japanese DVD release, clean opening and closing animation and previews of other Kitty Media titles.

Considering the questionable future of the Embracing Love manga releases in English, I highly recommend picking this DVD up to quench any frustrated desires to experience this story. This is one of those classic titles, the ones that originally defined the BL genre and helped it to explode in popularity: one of those “must see” titles. For a 60 minute 2 part OVA, though, some might find the retail price a bit high, but as starved as we are in the west for legitimate localizations of BL and yaoi on DVD, and the quality of this one in particular, I don’t think that should be considered a deal breaker.

Scary Movie 4 (Unrated & Uncensored) [HD DVD] (Sale)

Scary Movie 4 (Unrated & Uncensored) [HD DVD] Some comedy is like a scalpel; the Scary Movie series is a hand grenade, spewing bodily fluids and big-breasted women in all directions as they lampoon the latest horror. In Scary Movie 4‘s case, the main targets are War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw, and Tom Cruise jumping all over Oprah’s couch (the scariest of the lot). Along the way, potshots get taken at non-horror fare like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby, as well as obvious targets like Michael Jackson and George W. Bush, among others. Anna Faris (Lost in Translation) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners) return as the central characters wandering through a crazy quilt of horror scenarios, joined by Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) doing a dead-on parody of Cruise at his most manic. Cameos include everyone from Charlie Sheen to Shaquille O’Neal to Carmen Electra. Some of it’s funny, some of it’s not, but there’s a generally buoyant zaniness that comes from director David Zucker, one of the creators of Airplane!, which started the whole firehose-of-jokes aesthetic. –Bret Fetzer
Customer Review: More slapstick than satire
The “Scary Movie” series was always good for a laugh, but after three sequels the writers and creative directors seem to have worn out the plot. Although Scary Movie 4 has some good gags, overall it is very predictable and almost boring. Better to rent this one, instead of buying it.
Customer Review: 1 star out of 4
The Bottom Line:

If your idea of humor is people hitting their head on things, this movie is for you; if you like actual satire (or humor, if it comes to that) then please look elsewhere.

The Naked Brothers Band – The Movie (DVD Only) (Sale)

The Naked Brothers Band – The Movie (DVD Only) The Naked Brothers Band is a kid rock band that performs surprisingly catchy original songs written by 9-year-old Nat Wolff and performed by Nat, his 6-year-old brother Alex, and young friends Cole Hawkins, Allie DiMeco, Joshua Kaye, Thomas Batuello, and David Levi. Contrary to its name, the band performs fully clothed. The Naked Brothers Band–The Movie is a mockumentary comedy that blends the story of Nat and Alex’s sudden and sometimes difficult road to stardom with a satirical take on the popular rockumentary genre with its requisite focus on the stormy, sordid details of the lives of famous musicians. Produced by Nat and Alex’s mother Polly Draper (thirtysomething) and jazz musician father Michael Wolff (The Arsenio Hall Show“), the movie follows Nat, Alex, and the other band members through home footage of the band’s early preschool days (when they did indeed perform mostly naked and simply banged away on whatever was handy to make “music”) to more professional footage of current day concerts which highlight a remarkably poised group of young musicians performing increasingly popular songs like “Crazy Car” and “Got No Mojo.” Interview footage makes up the bulk of the program and is immensely satirical, featuring exaggerated scenes that detail Nat’s uneasy habit of speaking to Rosalina (Allie DiMeco) with a fake accent to cover his attraction to her, Alex’s development of a lemon-lime soda addiction that lands him in a rehabilitation Soda-holics at Sea program, and Alex’s tendency toward inappropriate “potty-mouth” remarks. Obviously, guest stars like Arsenio Hall, Cyndi Lauper, and Uma Thurman found the parallels to the extreme behavior of famous adult personalities humorous, but what speaks to some as a funny spoof on the Hollywood rockumentary genre is so over-done that other viewers will find it distasteful, offensive, and/or inappropriate for children. (Ages 9 to 13) –Tami Horiuchi
Customer Review: I hate it but my daughter loves it
I gave it five stars because my daughter, who is a Naked Bros Band fan, loves it. I, on the otherhand, think it’s incredibly silly – but it’s not me that it’s designed for so it really doesn’t matter what I think, anyway. If you like these guys, you’ll like the DVD.
